The first outdoor pow-wow of the season!! As my blog reads I am ojibway so powwows are rather large part of my life. I dance jingle and if you have never seen what that entails, I encourage you to google jingle dress dancer. It's not an easy dance thats for sure. It has been awhile since I have danced due to many reasons, but this weekend I put on my jingle dress and made the committement to dance. There are no words to describe the feeling of being able to last a full song (about 4 minutes).... The last time I danced, I almost died after I danced. Coughing, out of breath and red faced. This time, I was slightly out of wind, but came back quick.. Nose breathing throughout the dance helped with the bounce back. I can defintiely feel my legs after a whole weekend of dancing.
The best part was my mom helping me with my eating. She made sure we packed a cooler full of coconut water for hydration, fruits, veggies, cold cooked chicken skewers with dip, and I never once went to the food booths to buy greasy food. Unfortuneately there is a lot of un traditional foods at a pow-wow and most of the booths sell foods that are greasy, starchy and full of breads. It's not a good scene for someone who doesn't eat that stuff. The worst is that people who attend these gatherings are led to beleive that this is traditional foods. ITS NOT!! None of what is sold at pow-wows are what we used to eat. It is all colonized foods. I have to giggle though because when I ate at the pow-wow, I got some looks. It doesn't bother me, because I was full of energy to dance and not dying of carb fatigue.
Overall an awesome weekend and I am right back into the pow-wow groove.
